Centuries ago Opioid dependence was a considered a character flaw and it was only in the last two centuries since studies have reveal that Opioid dependency is in fact a brain disease and it is also considered as chronic disease like hypertension or diabetes but unlike these other diseases, opioid dependence carries a very powerful stigma. Dependence is a chronic, relapsing disease characterized by compulsive seeking and craving, and by neuron chemical and molecular changes in the brain. Physical dependence: An adaptive physiological state that occurs with continued use of a drug that produces withdrawal symptoms when they stop using the drug usually occurs when there is tolerance. There are a variety of factors than can contribute to the continued use of opioids. Among these are the use of heroin to escape from or cope with problems, the need to use increasing amounts of heroin to achieve the same effect, and the need for a “high.”
