| CBC
|
| The
CBC is used as a broad screening test to check for such disorders
as anemia, infection, and many other diseases. It is actually
a panel of tests that examines different parts of the blood
and includes: White Blood Cell count, White blood cell differential,
Red Blood Cell Count, Platelets Count, Hemoglobin, Hematoicrit,
Red cell distribution width, among other things. |
| CHEM 24 |
| A
large part of the laboratory report examines chemicals in
your blood and identifies whether body processes are working
correctly. Typically, 24 of these values are included in a
"Chem 24 report," also known as a SMAC or SMA20.
Your physician or clinical nurse manager may be able to help
you decipher your lab values. Chemistry panels should be administered
once a year if you're not taking medication, more often if
you are. |
| Cholesterol
Profile (lipids)
A coronary
risk profile involves a battery of blood tests to evaluate
cholesterol and triglycerides. These are indicators of risk
for heart disease.he blood is analyzed by the laboratory
to determine the levels of:
* Triglycerides
* LDL (low density lipoprotein) cholesterol
* HDL (high density lipoprotein) cholesterol
* Total cholesterol
* Serum VLDL (very low density lipoprotein) cholesterol

| Lead Levels
& ZPP |
| Zinc
protoporphyrin is primarily ordered to help detect iron
deficiency in children and to detect and monitor chronic
exposure to lead in adults.
ZPP
also may be ordered, along with a lead level, to test for
chronic lead exposure. Hobbyists who work with products
containing lead and people who live in older houses may
be at an increased risk of developing lead poisoning. This
is because lead is usually ingested or inhaled. Those who
inhale dust that contains lead, handle lead directly and
then eat, or in the case of children, eat paint chips that
contain lead (common in houses built prior to 1960) can
have elevated levels of lead and ZPP in their body. In an
industrial setting, the Occupational Safety & Health
Administration (OSHA) mandates the use of the ZPP test and
strongly recommends that a ZPP test be ordered every time
that a lead level is ordered to monitor an employee?s exposure
to lead. Both are necessary because ZPP will not reflect
recent or acute lead exposure, and it does not change quickly
when a person?s source of lead exposure is removed. ZPP
is best at detecting a person's average exposure to lead
over the last 3-4 months. |
| Cholinesterase |
| Serum
cholinesterase is a blood test that looks at certain enzymes
(acetylcholinesterase and pseudocholinesterase) that help
the nervous system work properly. This test is performed to
see if an individual has been exposed to organophosphates,
which are used in pesticides. |
| Methemeglobin |
| A methemeglobin
test is a rare test performed on individuals suspected of
having nitrates poisioning. |
| Heavy
Metals |
| These
blood and urine test can detect overexposures or accumulations
to a variety of metals and toxins such as arsenic, zinc, lead,
copper, and mercury. |
| Cadmium |
| This
test measures the amount of cadmium in the blood stream. Cadmium
is a lustrous, hard, steel gray metallic element used in steel
alloys and stainless steel, battery production, paint, pigments
and bakeware, electronic equipment, car parts, batteries,
phosphate fertilizer, sludge applications in agriculture,
contaminated food. ..and rust-proofing materials. Cadmium
can be toxic to humans. |
| U/A
(Urinalysis) |
| The
urinalysis is used as a screening or diagnostic used to help
detect substances or cellular material in the urine associated
with different metabolic and kidney disorders. Urinalyses
can detect a myriad of abnormalities in the body including
blood disorders, diabetes, drug use, and pregnancy among other
things. |
| PPD
(Tuberculosis) |
| The
tuberculosis skin test (also known as the tuberculin or PPD
test) is a test used to determine if someone has developed
an immune response to the bacterium that causes tuberculosis
(TB). Tuberculosis is an infectious disease of the lung that
is caused by the organism Mycobacterium tuberculosis and is
transmitted by the airborne spread of droplets containing
tubercle bacilli. |
